X-RAYS
: a blessing or a risk?
Raios-X : uma benção ou um risco?
The
X-Rays were discovered more than 100 years ago. During this time they
became an essential aid to diagnosis.Taking an X-Ray picture however,
means passing radiation through the body and this is concerning more
and more people about the negative effects of it. It’s said that X-Rays
may cause cancer. In fact the risk is tiny and depends on what part
of the body is irradiated .A chest X-Ray is equivalent to three days
of normal (natural) radiation. An X-Ray of the spine is equal to one
year of normal radiation. A single X-Ray of the breast, as in mammography
exams, is equal to six months of natural radiation. The risk of getting
a breast cancer as a result of mammography is about It’s uncomfortable to think that something designed to help can give us a disease, but the risk is so small that the advantages of discovering a cancer while it’s still treatable can’t be forgotten. Everything is a matter of choice, as it happens daily in our life. Nevertheless, it’s important to avoid X-Rays exams in some conditions: • If a woman is

Os Raios-X foram descobertos há mais de 100 anos. Durante este tempo eles se tornaram uma ajuda indispensável ao diagnóstico. Fazer uma imagem de Raios-X, no entanto, significa passar radiação através do corpo e isto está preocupando cada vez mais pessoas. Dizem que pode causar câncer. De fato o risco é diminuto e depende de que parte do corpo é irradiada. Um Raio-X do peito é equivalente a três dias de radiação normal(natural). Um Raio-X da espinha é igual a um ano de radiação normal. Um simples Raio-X do seio, como nos exames de mamografia, é igual a seis meses de radiação natural. O risco de adquirir um câncer do seio como resultado de mamografia é de 1 em 600.000. É desconfortável pensar que algo destinado a ajudar possa causar-nos uma doença, mas o risco é tão pequeno que as vantagens de descobrir um câncer enquanto ainda é tratável não podem ser esquecidas. É uma questão de escolha, como acontece em nossa vida diária. Entretanto, é importante evitar Raios-X em algumas condições: •
