Urban
Mythology
In
the USA , Professor
Jan Harold Brunvand, probably the world’s leading authority on urban
legends, give lectures on the subject at the
University of Utah
. The World Wide Web carries a wide range of urban
legends exploring the origins of the so-called “Urban Myths”. Many
of these myths are complete non-sense but many people believe them.
Here
are the most popular:
1) Alligators live in the sewers of New York because people
keep baby alligators as pets and flush them down the toilet when
they get too big.
2) Fijian pearl divers have their eardrums burst at an early age
so they can dive deeper.
3)Bikinis are illegal in
Turkey .
4)In India
they nod to say “no” and shake their heads to say “yes”.
5) In Arabic Countries it is rude not to burp after a meal, and
it’s an insult to show the soles of your feet to someone.
The five examples above are popular in many countries. Here are
three famous urban
legends.
KIDNEYS
IN AMERICA
The
young man was in New York for the first time on vacation.
At the hotel he met a young and beautiful girl who invited him for
a party in her apartment. He went there and after the first drink
he collapsed and fell asleep. When he woke up next morning he was
in his own hotel room with a pain in his abdomen. Looking down he
saw a neatly stitched scar on his side. He rushed to hospital and
the doctor was stunned to realize that one of his kidneys had been
surgically removed.
AIDS
MARY
An
English woman on her first trip to San Francisco got involved
with a handsome young American. Finding him far more attractive
and healthy than any other man she new in
England , she got soon into a
very hot passion, spending all her days and nights with him. But
the holidays came to an end and she had to go back to
England . There were tears from
both sides and she made him promise to keep in touch. “ Don’t worry-
said the American- I have already sent you my first letter”.When
she got home in England , there was in fact a
small box waiting for her. She opened it at once. It looked like
a ring box, but inside there was a small skeleton and a hand written
note “ Welcome to the world of AIDS”.
Note: In another version is a man who is seduced, and after
making love with the woman, he finds in the bathroom mirror this
message written with lipstick:“Welcome to AIDS club”
THE
CAR THIEF
A
young German couple was thrilled when their wealthy relatives offered
them the use of their town house and a brand new BMW while they
were on a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea
. They spent their first night exploring their new house and the
next morning they decided to go for a car ride. They discovered
the car had been stolen. They called the police and the insurance
company. After an hour the car was mysteriously returned and was
carefully parked in front of the house, with a note hanging on the
windshield. “ Thanks for the use of the car, it saved my life. Please
accept these theater tickets with my compliments”
The tickets were for the best seat in a very popular musical play.
Scarcely believing their luck, the young couple put on their best
clothes and went to the theater that night. When they came back
they discovered that the house had been ransacked.

Mitologia
Urbana
Nos
EUA, o Professor Jan Harold Brunvand, provavelmente a maior autoridade
RINS
NA AMÉRICA.
O jovem estava
em New York
pela primeira vez
em férias. No
no abdômen.
Eles passaram a primeira
Imediatamente chamaram a policia e a seguradora.
E quanto a você? Acredita em alguma dessas lendas
urbanas?
