O dia de São Valetim equivale ao nosso "Dia dos Namorados" embora em data diferente.
No Brasil esse dia foi colocado no mês de junho por ser tradicionalmente um mês fraco para o comércio.
Com o Dia dos Namorados o comércio em geral encontrou uma nova fonte de renda.

                  Valentine Day


On February 14 is celebrated Valentine's Day. In USA and other countries is the day when couples in love show their affection to each other. In Brazil there is the “Dia dos Namorados” – but it’s celebrated on June 12th.

Its origin came from Rome on the 5th Century as a tribute to Saint Valentine, a Catholic Saint.

Before the establishment of Valentine Day, for more than eight hundred years, the Romans practiced a pagan celebration commemorating young men rite of passage to honor the god Lupercus. The celebration contained a lottery in which young men should draw the names of teenager girls from a box. The girl assigned to each man in that way would be his sexual mate during the rest of that year.

Trying to eliminate the pagan festival, Pope Gelasius ordered a change in the lottery. Instead of names of young girls, the box would contain the names of saints. Both women and men were allowed to take a name from that box and the game was to imitate the saint’s life during the rest of the year.

Of course many of the young men didn't like the rule changes.

So the Church looked for a Catholic saint to replace Lupercus. It should be a saint to be the patron of love. They found a suitable one in Saint Valetine, who, in AD 270 had been beheaded by Emperor Claudius. The Emperor had noticed that married men were poor soldiers because they got worried about their family and wouldn't take big risks. So he banned marriage in the Roman Empire. But Valentine continued marrying young couples in secret. When Claudius found out about Valentine he first tried to convert him to paganism. But Valentine answered trying to convert the Emperor. When he failed Valentine was stoned and beheaded.

During the days in prison Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer. His love for her and his great faith, made possible to heal her from her blindness before his death. A day before his execution Valentine wrote a message to her signed:” From your Valentine" - the phrase has been used on this day ever since. Although the lottery for women had been banned by the church, the mid-February holiday, in honor of Saint Valentine, was still used by Roman men to seek the love of the women. It became a tradition the men give the women they admired hand written messages of affection, containing Valentine's name.

The Valentine card came from this tradition and the true first Valentine card was sent by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife in 1415. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London at that time.

 Em 14 de fevereiro celebra-se o dia de São Valentim nos USA e outros países sendo o dia em que casais apaixonados mostram sua afeição  um pelo outro. No Brasil há o “Dia dos Namorados” – mas é celebrado em 12 de junho.
Sua origem veio de Roma no século 5 DC como tributo ao santo católico São Valentim.
Antes do estabelecimento desse dia, por mais de oitocentos anos, os Romanos praticaram uma celebração pagã comemorando um rito de passagem dos jovens em honra ao deus Lupercus. A celebração continha uma loteria em que homens jovens sorteavam o nome de uma menina que seria sua companheira sexual pelo resto do ano.
Tentando eliminar o festival pagão o papa Gelasius ordenou uma mudança na loteria. Em vez de nomes de moças, a caixa conteria os nomes de santos. Ambos, mulheres e homens, podiam participar sorteando um nome e o jogo era imitar a vida daquele santo até o final do ano.
É claro que muitos jovens não gostaram da mudança de regras.
Então a Igreja procurou um santo católico para substituir Lupercus. Deveria ser um santo que pudesse ser o patrono do amor. Eles encontraram um santo adequado em São Valentim, que, em 270 DC foi decapitado pelo imperador Claudius. O imperador tinha percebido que homens casados eram soldados fracos porquê preocupados com as famílias eles não aceitavam grandes riscos. Então ele baniu o casamento no Império Romano.Mas Valentim continuou a casar em segredo os jovens pares que o procuravam. Quando o imperador descobriu, ele tentou converter Valentim ao paganismo. Em resposta Valentim tentou converter o imperador. Ao falhar na tentativa,Valentim foi apedrejado e decapitado.
Durante seus dias na prisão Valentim apaixonou-se pela filha cega de seu carcereiro. Seu amor a sua grande fé possibilitaram a cura da cegueira antes da morte dele. Um dia antes da execução Valentim escreveu uma mensagem para ela assinada “Do seu Valentim” – a frase tem sido usada desde então. Embora a loteria por mulheres tenha sido banida pela igreja o feriado no meio de fevereiro em honra de São Valentim ainda era usado pelos jovens Romanos para buscar o amor das mulheres. Tornou-se uma tradição os homens darem mensagens manuscritas para suas amadas contendo o nome de Valentim.
O cartão do dia dos namorados veio desta tradição e o primeiro cartão foi enviado por Charles, duque de Orleans à sua esposa em 1415. Ele era prisioneiro na Torre de Londres naquela época.
