Had better

We use “had better” plus the infinitive without “to” to give advice. 
Although “had” is the past form of “have”, we use “had better” to give advice about the present or future.

Usa-se "had better" mais o infinitivo sem o "to" para dar conselhos. 
Embora "had" seja o passado de "have" , usamos "had better" para dar conselhos sobre presente e o futuro.

·You'd better tell her everything. (Seria melhor você dizer tudo a ela)
· I'd better get back to work. (Seria melhor eu voltar ao trabalho.)
· We'd better meet early. (Seria melhor nos encontrarmos cedo)

NOTE que é muito comum o uso das formas contraídas (You'd = You had, We'd = We had) etc...

The negative form is “had better not”.
( A forma negativa é "had better not")
· You'd better not say anything.
(Seria  melhor você não dizer nada)

· I'd better not come.
(Seria melhor que eu não viesse)

· We'd better not miss the start of his presentation.
 (É melhor não perdermos o inicio da apresentação)

We use “had better” to give advice about specific situations, not general ones.
Usamos "had better" para dar conselhos sobre situações especificas,não situações gerais.

If you want to talk about general situations, you must use “should”.
Se você quiser falar de situações gerais(ou genéricas) use "should"
Examples:
You should brush your teeth before you go to bed.
(Você deveria escovar os dentes antes de ir dormir)

· You shouldn't listen to negative people. 
(Você não deveria ouvir pessoas negativas)

· He should dress more appropriately for the office.
 (Ele deveria se vestir apropriadamente para o escritório)

However, when we use “had better” there is a suggestion that if the advice is not followed,  something bad will happen.
Entretanto quando se usa "had better" ha uma sugestão de que se o conselho não for seguido algo ruim  acontecerá.

·You'd better do what I say or  you will get in trouble.
 (Seria melhor você fazer o que digo ou voce vai se meter em encrencas)

·I'd better get back to work or my boss will be angry with me.
(É (ou seria) melhor eu voltar ao trabalho ou o patrão ficara zangado comigo)

· We'd better get to the airport by five or  we may miss the flight.
(É (ou seria) melhor chegarmos ao aeroporto pelas cinco ou podemos perder o voo.)
